Natural and organic hair dye

What makes H2O Water Colour different from regular hair dye?

We've swapped ammonia for sodium metasilicate, and high-strength peroxide for sodium percarbonate. Same result, gentler process - no harsh fumes, less scalp irritation, and kinder to your hair's structure over time.

Is H2O Water Colour permanent?

Yes - but gentler than traditional tints. No ammonia, resorcinol, ethanolomine or peroxide means colour develops more slowly and fades gradually, rather than leaving a harsh regrowth line. The result is softer and more dimensional.

Does it smell as strong as regular hair dye?

No. That sharp, eye-watering smell comes from ammonia - which we don't use. Most people find ours almost odourless by comparison.

Why don't you include a full application kit with every order?

We believe in buying only what you need. If you are new to us, our Starter Kit includes everything to get going. After that, reorder only what runs out. Less waste, less clutter - only pay for what you actually use.

Frequently Asked Questions

CHOOSING & USING YOUR COLOUR

Practical advice on picking your shade, working out how many pouches you need, and getting the best result at home from the first application.

Can it lighten my hair?

No. Without peroxide, it can't lift colour. Choosing a shade lighter than your natural colour will add gloss and a soft hint of tone rather than lift.

How do I choose the right shade?

Choose closest to your natural colour. Switching from a box dye? Try one shade lighter than you are used to - our formula can seem slightly darker because it's not mixed with peroxide.

Not sure? Email a photo to info@naturalcolourworks.com and we'll help.

How many Colour pouches do I need?

One pouch covers roots or short hair. Two for shoulder length; three for longer or thicker hair. A visual guide is on each colour page, or send us a photo for personal advice.

Should I apply it to clean or dirty hair?

Always on freshly washed, fully dried hair. Use a clarifying shampoo first to remove product build-up. Avoid oils for the first few days after colouring to prevent transfer onto fabrics.

How do I apply your hair colour?

Please read all instructions carefully, always skin test 48 hours before use and always protect your clothes and home from colour staining. Use old towels.

What you will need from the kitchen:

  • Clean bottle with lid
  • Measuring jug
  • Bowl

See our video for ideas of what to use!

How do you mix up the colour?

  1. Carefully pour 70 ml or 5 tablespoons of hand-hot water into your clean bottle per pouch of Natural Colour Works™ H20 Water Colour. Don’t over dilute.
  2. Add all the H20 Water Colour powder into your bottle and screw on the lid tight.
  3. Give it a good old vigorous shake for at least 10 seconds until you can’t hear liquid sploshing around anymore. Great for the arms and you now have a bottle of H20 Water Colour foam.

When do I need to do a full head treatment?

If this is your first time using Natural Colour Works™ H20 Water Colour, or your hair is completely faded out and showing no signs of regrowth, we’d recommend a full head treatment.

  1. Start with clean, dry hair that’s been washed with a clarifying shampoo. Don’t use conditioner or 2-in-1 products.
  2. Apply a barrier cream or Vaseline to the hairline and ears before colouring to help reduce staining.
  3. Wearing water resistant gloves (either ours or your own) pour your Natural Colour Works™ H20 Water Colour foam into a stain resistant bowl and using your tint brush for life apply foam to your roots at roughly 1 cm intervals.
  4. Give any grey an extra thick covering and massage the left-over foam through the rest of the length of your hair evenly.
  5. Pile your hair up on top and cover with your Reusable Cap making sure to fix it tightly to prevent any drips or hair drying out.
  6. Leave it on for 90 minutes, then rinse the foam out of your hair until the water runs clear.
  7. Use your usual shampoo to wash and rinse again, then apply your conditioner as usual, rinse, style, and you’re good to go.

Can I just touch up the roots?

If you’ve used Natural Colour Works™ H20 Water Colour before and are looking to touch up the roots and boost that glossy shine, follow these simple steps.

  1. Start with clean, dry hair that’s been washed with a clarifying shampoo. Don’t use conditioner or 2-in-1 products.
  2. Wearing water resistant gloves (either ours or your own) pour your Natural Colour Works™ H20 Water Colour foam into a stain resistant bowl and using your tint brush for life apply foam to your roots just to cover the regrowth. Apply it thickly to grey hair and be careful not to go over your last application. Hold onto the rest of the foam for later and pile your hair up on top with a clip. Cover with your Reusable Cap making sure to fix it tightly to prevent any drips or hair drying out.
  3. Leave it on for 90 minutes, then apply the remaining foam through the rest of your hair, recover with your Reusable Cap and leave for another 15 minutes.
  4. Rinse the foam out of your hair until the water runs clear. Use your usual shampoo to wash and rinse again, then apply your conditioner as usual, rinse, style, and you’re good to go.

INGREDIENTS & SAFETY

Should I do a skin test before I use H20 Water Colour?

ALWAYS SKIN TEST 48 HRS BEFORE USE

  1. Allergies are personal and a minority of people may react to one of our ingredients. This can change over time, so even if you’ve used Natural Colour Works™ H20 Water Colour before, we recommend that you ALWAYS skin test 48 hours before use.
  2. Take a pinch of Natural Colour Works™ H20 Water Colour powder from the pouch and mix it with a few drops of water in a small bowl. Use a kitchen clip to reseal the pouch immediately and make sure it doesn’t get wet.
  3. Wash a small patch of skin inside your elbow and pat dry. Apply some of the colour mixture to this area with cotton wool.
  4. Allow to dry for 48hrs.
  5. If you feel any irritation, redness, swelling or burning during this time, it’s likely that you’ve got an allergy to one of the ingredients and you shouldn’t use it.

Does it contain PPD, PTD or TDS?

Yes - currently one of these is needed to cover grey. Our formulation has PPD and PTD. We use sulphate salt forms, which are gentler than those in most traditional dyes. No ammonia, no peroxide. Always patch test 48 hours before use.

What does "+/-" mean on the ingredient list?

It means the ingredient appears in some shades but not all. Different colours use different dye molecules - a warm auburn needs different ones to a cool ash brown, for example.

What's sodium percarbonate?

Our gentler alternative to hydrogen peroxide. It activates colour then breaks down into water and a harmless salt - the same ingredient used in oxygen-based dental cleaning tablets. Reassuringly mild.

What is sodium metasilicate - and why use it instead of ammonia?

It's our alkalising agent: it gently opens the hair cuticle so colour can get in, just like ammonia does. Unlike ammonia, it stays in the formula - no evaporation, no fumes, no scalp sting.

What's sodium lauroyl sarcosinate?

A gentle cleansing ingredient derived from a natural amino acid and coconut fatty acids. It helps colour distribute evenly and rinse cleanly - far milder than the SLS found in many traditional dyes.

There's mineral oil (paraffinum liquidum) in the formula - is that okay?

Cosmetic-grade mineral oil protects your hair from drying out during colouring and creates a gentle scalp barrier. It's non-comedogenic (doesn’t clog your pores) with a strong safety record. We'd rather you know it's there.

I see xanthan gum on the label - isn't that a food ingredient?

Yes, actually. Produced by natural fermentation, it's our plant-based thickener. It gives the formula its gel consistency so it spreads evenly and stays put. Biodegradable and gentle on skin.
